Team Guru retain winter league title!

Defending champions of the Tunnel Barn Farm Winter League, Team Guru, retained their title last weekend, finishing top after battling against 21 of the best match outfits in the country over ten rounds.

The teams of four league at the Warwickshire fishery saw Steve Ringer, Pemb Wrighting, Paul Holland and Myles Levy enter the last round sitting on top of the leaderboard, and by the end of the day they’d secured victory.

They performed consistently throughout the ten rounds, including a number of wins and second places, and eventually finished 88 points clear of the other 21 teams, with a total of 697 points. MAP/Bait Tech were second with 609 points and Match Fishing Drawbags third on 604 points.

Pemb revealed: “We entered again this year to try and defend the crown that we won last year. The league consists of 22 teams from far and wide, which includes some of the best anglers in the country, so it’s a hard one to win.

“We had a steady start to the league, finishing in second place in round one, and then the next few rounds were good for the team, gathering momentum and coming into the last round we’d only finished outside of the top three teams once – and that was on weight countback when we came fourth!

“After the halfway point it became apparent that it was a four-horse race for the title and with the last round upon us we were nearly home and dry! Luckily, we stood strong on the day and finished third, and ended the league in first place overall.

“It was a great feeling to win the league again against all those top teams and anglers, and a real sense of achievement for all of the team – we had the odd round where some of the team couldn’t make it and Robbie Taylor, Jake Gallagher, Ben Hagg, Adam Wakelin and Dave Brown all did a superb job on the matches where they stood in for people.

“We had some great matches on what is one of the very best venues for bites during the colder months, which is what it is all about, and this league pays out a large percentage of the pools each round to the top three teams and that really keeps you trying your hardest even on the toughest days!

“This format is very popular judging by the waiting list and I’d like to thank Sarah, Les and Mike from Tunnel Barn for running a great league once again, and we’ll be back next year!”
